Do I have to register to use MessageDrop?
You can use MessageDrop without a user account. However, some functions require a user account.
Is MessageDrop free?
MessageDrop itself currently does not charge a usage fee. Connection and data charges, for example for mobile data or roaming, may still apply depending on your tariff and provider.
How old do I have to be to use MessageDrop?
You must be at least 16 years old to use MessageDrop. If additional legal requirements apply in your country, you must also follow those requirements.
Is MessageDrop available in multiple languages?

Can I create public messages as a guest?
No. To create or publish public messages, you need a user account.
Can I see weather information as a guest?
Yes. Weather information can be opened for places when the feature is available and your device has an internet connection. The displayed data depends on external weather data sources.
Can I see air quality information as a guest?
Yes. Air quality information can be opened for places when data is available. The values depend on external data sources and should be understood as informational context, not as official safety advice.
Can I search for places as a guest?
Yes. As a guest, you can search for places. Which results are shown depends on your search and the available data.
Can I search for experiences nearby as a guest?
Yes. You can search for experiences around a place as a guest when the experience search is available. Results may come from external providers and can depend on location and availability.
Can I search for hashtags as a guest?
Yes. Hashtag search helps you find public messages connected to a topic. As with other public content, results depend on available messages, location context, and moderation status.
Which features require a user account?
Creating public messages, private notes, private places, private documents, and private images requires a user account. The chat feature also requires a user account.
Is data stored on my device as a guest?
Yes, some settings and local data can be stored on your device so the app works smoothly. MessageDrop is designed to keep as much data as possible local to your device.
Are my settings kept as a guest?
Usually yes, as long as your browser keeps the local app data. If you clear browser storage, use private browsing, or change devices, local guest settings can be lost.
Can I switch from guest mode to a user account later?
Yes. You can use MessageDrop as a guest first and create a user account at any time later. If you want, you can delete your user account again and return to guest mode.
Can I open external content such as YouTube, TikTok, or Pinterest as a guest?
Yes, if external content is enabled in your settings. External providers are separate services with their own terms, privacy policies, cookies, and tracking behavior.

How do I create a user account?
You create a user account directly in the app. It exists only on this device and in this browser and is not synchronized between devices or browsers.
Why do I need a PIN?
The PIN helps protect your local user identity and sensitive actions on your device. It is part of the security concept for private and account-related features.
What happens if I forget my PIN?
If you forget your PIN, access to this user account is no longer possible. If you have a backup, you can restore it. Otherwise, you need to create a new user account.
What information does my profile contain?
In your profile, you can set a profile name, a profile picture, and a default font.
Can I change my profile later?
Yes. You can change your profile name, profile picture, and default font in the app at any time.
Is my profile visible to others?
Your profile always remains private and is never publicly visible. If a contact requests your profile, you decide whether you want to share your current profile with that contact.

Yes. Other users can react to messages with like or dislike and write comments.

What are private notes?
Private notes are personal notes that you create for yourself. They are intended for your own use and are separate from public messages on the map.
Who can see my private notes?
Private notes are stored locally on your device and in your browser. They are visible only to you.
Can I store private images?
Yes. You can select private images from your device and reference them locally. If they contain location data, MessageDrop can place them automatically on the map. Your images stay local and are not transferred to our servers.
Can I store private documents?
Yes. You can select private documents from your device and reference them locally. Your documents stay local and are not transferred to our servers.
Where is private content stored?
Private content stays on your device and in your browser. MessageDrop uses local file references and does not transfer this content to our servers.
Can I delete private content later?
You can delete private notes at any time. For private images and documents, MessageDrop removes the local reference to the original file. The original file remains on your device.

What is a place in MessageDrop?
A place is a location-based entry on the map. It can collect context such as messages, tiles, weather, air quality, experiences, and other useful information around that location.
Can I edit places?
Yes. You can edit or delete your own places at any time.
Can I follow places?
Yes. You can follow or unfollow places at any time. When you follow a place, you will be notified when a new message is created there — if you have allowed notifications.

Can I contact other users?
Yes. MessageDrop includes contact and private communication features for users who connect with each other.
How do I connect with other users?
The easiest way is to connect with people you already know, for example by scanning a connect QR code in person. If you are not in the same place, you can share your connect ID, for example by email.
Are private messages encrypted?
Yes. Private messages are transmitted encrypted and signed.
Can MessageDrop read my private messages?
No. MessageDrop cannot read private messages.
What happens if I delete a contact?
Deleting a contact removes that connection from your app context. After that, you can no longer send private messages to this user, and this user can no longer reach you privately either.
Using MessageDrop with a user account · Data, backup, and safety

Why should I create a backup?
Much of your data stays local on your device and in your browser. If this local data is lost, it cannot be restored without a backup.
What happens if I lose my device?
If you lose your device, local data can be lost as well. You should protect your device, keep your PIN safe, and create backups for data that is important to you.
Can I delete my user account?
Yes. You can delete your user account at any time. Please note: deletion is final and permanently removes all connected data — both locally and on the server.
